How do I connect to my MS SQL database using Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express / Microsoft Visual Studio?

Using Microsoft Visual Studio 2008/2005
  1. Select Microsoft Visual Studio from Start -> Programs -> Microsoft Visual Studio
  2. Click on Tools and then Connect to Database
  3. Enter your SQL server name including the '5801' port number for Server name (e.g. mssql4.negox.com,5801)
  4. Check the radio button for Use SQL Server Authentication in Log on to the server
  5. Enter your database username for User name and your database password for Password as specified for you
  6. Select or enter your database name in Connect to a database
  7. Click on OK
Using Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express
  1. Select SQL Server Management Studio Express from Start -> Programs -> Microsoft SQL Server
  2. Enter your SQL server name including the '5801' port number for Server name (e.g. mssql4.negox.com,5801)
  3. Select SQL Server Authentication for Authentication
  4. Enter your database username for Login and your database password for Password as specified for you
  5. Click on Options and select or enter your database name for Connect to database
  6. Click on Connect
Using Enterprise Manager
  1. Select Client Network Utility from Start -> Programs -> Microsoft SQL Server -> Client Network Utility
  2. Click on Alias and then Add and check the radio button for TCP/IP in Network Libraries
  3. Enter your SQL server name for Server name
  4. Uncheck Dynamically determine port and enter '5801' in the Port Number box
  5. Specify a descriptive name for the Server alias and close Client Network Utility
  6. Open Enterprise Manager
  7. Right click SQL Server Group
  8. Select New SQL Server Registration
  9. Click Next in the Register SQL server wizard
  10. The next page will display the list of available servers and your server will be listed by the Server Alias name you specified above
  11. Select the server name and click Add
  12. Select SQL authentication from the next page
  13. You should be able to connect to you database after specifying the login information from this page.
